Stresses? Fatigued Feel Exhausted? Feed Your Adrenals Glands!
When your adrenal glands are fatigued your entire body may suffer from extreme exhaustion, producing aches, pains, tiredness, headaches, feelings of emotional vulnerability, allergies, weight gain and even infertility. This is why it's one of the first things a well trained Kinesiologist/Neuro-Trainer will check for.
Your body has two adrenal glands that sit above each of your kidneys. Your adrenal glands help you deal with stress and your life challenges. These challenges could be from injury, disease, finances, work or relationship problems. Your energy, endurance, stamina and digestion depend on good adrenal functioning.
Those with adrenal fatigue often have blood sugar problems (always hungry), psychological imbalances such as increased fears and anxiety and may rely on coffee, cola, cigarettes and other forms of stimulants to keep them going. This artificially stimulates the adrenals for instant energy but makes the problem worse in the long term.
People with adrenal fatigue will have to drag themselves out of bed, drag themselves through the day, get a burst of energy around 6-7 pm, followed by sleepiness at 9pm, which is often resisted. They then get a “second wind” at 10-11pm that often keeps them from falling asleep until 1-2am. The whole exhaustion cycle begins again the next day.
When your adrenal glands become depleted, it leads to a decrease in certain hormone levels particularly cortisol. Your adrenal glands secrete more than 50 hormones. For example, cortisol helps your body respond to stress, convert food into energy, normalize blood sugars, and maintains your immune system. This is why a lot of stress makes our immune system run low. Other hormones such as the Mineralocorticoids, e.g. aldosterone, maintain blood pressure. Adrenalin increases your heart rate and controls blood flow to your muscles and brain. It helps the conversion of glycogen to glucose in your liver. If you are pushing your adrenals to work harder you become depleted in these hormones.
Consequences of exhausted adrenals
Often those with a reduction in adrenalin will get asthma and suffer allergies. Our adrenals also supply a small amount of estrogen after menopause. For women in particular, if you are suffering hot flushes you may need to deal with your adrenals and not just your ovaries.
When pregnant, if you have low functioning adrenals, you will use the babies adrenals to cope with the physical burden of being pregnant. This risks exhausting the babies adrenals before they are born and can lead to a crying unsettled baby with poor digestion and allergies from birth.
Symptoms of Adrenal fatigue
Fatigue and weakness, especially in the morning and afternoon, trouble waking up in the morning, despite a full night’s sleep A suppressed immune system, increased allergies, muscle and bone loss, muscular weakness, depression, cravings for foods high in salt, sugar or fat, hormonal imbalances, increased PMS or menopausal symptoms.
Low sex, drive skin problems, autoimmune disorders, lightheadedness when getting up from sitting or lying down, decreased ability to handle stress and poor memory.
Recover From Adrenal Fatigue
It takes time to burn out your adrenal glands, and therefore time for them to recover. You can expect recovery time to take from a few months for minor fatigue to at least 18 months for severe adrenal fatigue.
Changing your diet, your reactions to stress, supporting your adrenals, pancreas and thyroid function with supplements are a must.
